There’s no denying that “maskne” is one of our new realities. Friction, trapped heat, oil, dirt, and
bacteria cause the acne we see around our mouth, jawline, chin, and cheeks when we take ours masks off.
This acne has a name, too— acne mechanica. This is the same acne you get on your body from heavy, tight fitting clothes and the acne that football players get from their bulky helmets. Now, how could we help fight these unwanted breakouts using skincare?
Cleanse your skin before putting your mask on, as well as after you take it off. This will insure that the impurities that get trapped beneath your mask will wash away. PCA Skin has a great Benzoyl Peroxide cleanser with antibacterial benefits.
Hydrate your skin! A lightweight moisturizer will help protect the top layer of skin. I recommend the ClearSkin moisturizer from PCA Skin.
Opt for skincare instead of makeup. Makeup can clog your pores, making it easier for breakouts to occur.
Use products with salicylic acid, a natural exfoliant, to help combat acne. PCA skin acne gel can be applied underneath your moisturizer for effective results. Benzoyl Peroxide is an ingredient that can be used to spot treat pesky breakouts. I’d recommend the PCA Acne Cream Spot Treat.
Get professional treatments. Aestheticians are licensed to use products with stronger, more effective ingredients that you can’t buy off the shelf. They will be able to help figure out the root cause of your breakouts and what products would be best for you. Treatments such as microdermabrasion and peels that you can only be applied by a professional are great for acne-prone skin.
